Admission information
Objectives
The students are able to identify and discuss societal dimensions of STEM topics.
Description
This course offers an interdisciplinary setting in which the participants develop their own videogame prototype (no programming required) — it is therefore aimed at all students, e.g. from the STEM sciences, Games Engineering and the School of Social Sciences and Technology.
The students will be introduced to the social science-perspective on a selection of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) topics as well as the creative potential of video games for reflection, e.g. worldbuilding, storytelling and decision-making. Based on these inputs, the students develop their prototype thematizing a STEM topic while enabling the creative potential of games to integrate societal and ethical aspects. The final prototype can be presented e.g. as a poster, illustrations or be programmed.
Location: the new Theaterlabor at the alterantive Shaere building, dedicated to education and culture.
Multimedia Reader: The reader for the workshop on Monday will be uploaded on 19.12 (podcast epsiodes, youtube videos, newspaper articles, essays)
Mo, 09.01
1) Workshop (the group will be split) with Science and Technology Studies (social sciences) Scholars on the topics:
a. Illicit Economies: Drugs, technology and coca cultivation (Dr. Aysel Sultan, Department STS)
b. Communication of outer-space technology and science (Dr. Zinaida Vasilyeva, Department STS)
2) Workshop with the GameLab of University Konstanz on the topics:
a. The working-process of Game Design
b. Examples for the game-specific creative potential
Tue, 10.01
1) Guest Speaker Janina Sieber from the Theaterlabor, who is a TUM architecture graduate, will talk about the creative process of designing the Theaterlabor.
2) Guest Speaker Dr. Rudolf Inderst (Prof. of Game Studies at IU Internationale Hochschule) will talk about the 'Depiction of Science, Research and Technology in digital Games'.
